AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means arranging your website and the public data about your company so that AI assistants and search engines can understand, verify and cite them. It does not replace SEO optimization, but builds on it. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation, but the probability can be increased and progress tracked.
What AEO actually means
Classic SEO optimization aims for your page to appear as high as possible in the list of results. With AEO optimization the goal is different: that the system composing the answer picks you as a source or names you as a recommendation.
The terms AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) describe almost the same work in practice, so they should not be understood as two separate disciplines.
How it differs from SEO optimization
Most of the foundations are shared: a technically sound website, quality content, fast loading and external evidence that you are reliable. The difference is in the emphasis.
- The answer must be extractable: the key fact sits in the first sentences of the page, not buried in the fifth paragraph.
- Data must be consistent: the name, address, phone number and description of services are the same on the website, the Google profile, LinkedIn and in articles about you.
- Evidence must be verifiable: reviews, certificates with a verification link and media articles count for more than claims about yourself.
- Structured data helps machines: schema.org markup for the company, person, services and prices says exactly what is what.
What you can do right away
- For each service, write a separate page that in the first paragraph clearly answers what you do, for whom and at roughly what price.
- Publish prices or ranges. Pages with concrete numbers are easier to cite than pages that only say "contact us".
- Align company data in every place where you appear, including the Google Business Profile.
- Add schema.org markup and check it with the structured data testing tool.
- Gather evidence in one place: reviews, certificates and media mentions, each with a link to the source.
- Check robots.txt. If you want AI search engines to be able to read you, their crawlers must not be blocked.
- Show the date of the last update on pages that change, such as the pricing page.
What AEO cannot do
No agency can honestly promise that ChatGPT or Gemini will recommend you. Answers are generated anew each time and differ from user to user. That is why progress is measured by a sample of real queries your customers ask, repeated every few weeks, with a note of who was mentioned and how.
A special note on FAQ markup: according to a Search Engine Journal report from May 2026, Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in search. The FAQPage markup remains valid, but do not expect expanded displays. The value is that the questions and answers are clearly written on the page itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
In practice they are almost the same work. AEO emphasizes optimization for systems that give direct answers, and GEO for generative models. The steps you take almost completely overlap.
Can anyone guarantee a recommendation in ChatGPT answers?
No. Answers change from query to query, so the only honest promise is that measures which increase the probability are carried out and that progress is measured.
Do I need AEO if I already have good SEO?
Good SEO is a solid foundation, but AEO adds a check of data consistency, structured markup and external evidence, which classic optimization often skips.
How quickly are results visible?
Search engines can pick up technical changes in days or weeks. Authority and external evidence build over months. A specific deadline is not realistic to promise.
